So, you’re thinking about starting a blog? I have two words for you…DO IT! Blogging is a great way to share the things you are passionate about and earn money doing it! Blogging is fun, but it is also a great way to ease into the “work from home” market. Wouldn’t it be nice to set your own hours for a change? I thought so!
Setting up a blog is a fairly simple process. There are really only six simple steps you need to follow to get your blog up and running like a pro in no time at all….and you can finish them all in less than an hour! I will walk you through those steps, and give you some recommendations along the way that will help you get your very own blog set up so you can be on your way to blogging success.
Decide what your niche will be. A niche is basically just your area of expertise. Do you garden, cook, build birdhouses, decorate, bake cakes, etc? Whatever your blog will focus on is considered your niche. Sometimes a blogger will choose to do a “lifestyle” blog which means they cover several different areas…Seashells and Sweet Tea is an example of this type of blog. A lifestyle blog allows you to cover a variety of topics if you don’t want to focus on just a single topic. Be careful though…your topics should be somewhat related to give your blog an appearance of consistency. Avoid things like “Brittany’s Fly Fishing, Shoe Repair and Bakery.” Too many niches will confuse your readers.
Choose your domain name. Choosing your domain name is important. It is the name that you will be known by. It is the name that will represent you on the internet, on social media, etc. There are a lot of different ways to go about choosing your name, and everyone has a different opinion. Basically, it is your name and you can choose what you like. Keep in mind that whatever name you choose should have a few qualities…It should be easy to remember, easy to spell and available. Believe it or not, with so many bloggers in the world today, a lot of domain names are already taken. There are several different schools of thought on choosing a name for your blog. Do you want something cute and catchy (Daisies and Dewdrops), or do you prefer something that specifically highlights your niche (Tea Time Treats)? You might choose to go with something like a clever made up word (EggCentricities) for your blog about raising chickens, or if you plan on building a brand around your own lifestyle and products, you can simply use your own name (Amy Smithfield) . I recommend making a list of several names you like, then checking social media sites and the internet to see if someone else is already using the name you came up with. Once you have decided on a name, it is time to move on to the next step.
Choose your web hosting platform. That sounds complicated, right? Well, it’s not. First of all…what IS a web hosting platform? Think of it as the landlord who rents you a space on the internet for your blog. See? Simple! There are a ton of web hosting companies out there, and they all have pros and cons. There are some that are free, and some that are paid. I highly recommend signing up with BlueHost, and I’ll tell you why.

It is more than enough to handle your blog (It is the package I use). The starter plan has everything you will need to start up and run your blog successfully. I recommend choosing the 36-month plan because a)It’s the cheapest, and b)It locks in your monthly rate for 3 whole years. It gives you one less thing to worry about.

Download WordPress. Think of WordPress as the program that manages all of your blog content. makes it easy to download WordPress with their one-click installation. Just click it, and it will download all by itself. Aren’t you happy you chose BlueHost? Once WordPress is installed, you can begin to personalize your blog any way you want it. WordPress offers a ton of FREE themes (think of these as decorative templates for setting up your blog), or you can choose to purchase a theme from various companies on the internet that specialize in theme building and designing. You get a few extra options for personalization, and a wider variety of styles with the paid themes, although a free theme would work just fine for a beginning blogger. If you are serious about blogging, I personally recommend the Foodie Pro Theme from StudioPress. (It is the theme I use!) I love that it is simple and uncluttered, easy to set up, uses lots of widgets and time-saving devices that make it easy to organize exactly the way you want it, and it offers lots of other features as well. Another great benefit to using the Foodie Pro Theme is the number of free, easy to understand tutorials available for this popular theme. The Foodie Pro Theme runs on the Genesis Framework. It is by far the most popular framework used in blogging today. There are a huge number of blog themes (free and otherwise) that use the Genesis Framework. It functions well, is reliable and easy to work with, and runs more themes than any other framework. If you decide to choose the Foodie Pro Theme from StudioPress, you can get a special deal by buying the Foodie Pro Theme and Genesis Framework at the same time. So, now you have chosen your framework and your theme…what’s next?
Personalize your blog. Set it up the way YOU want it! Change the fonts, colors, images, menus, etc. to fit the style you want YOUR blog to have. Have fun! This is the creative part of the blogging experience….enjoy it! Don’t stress too much over getting this perfect right away. Trust me, you will change it a million times before you finally settle on the design you like. And, you can change it anytime you like! Once you have your personalization all done…it is time to start blogging! Take lots of pictures, write your heart out, load recipes, post tutorials, etc. Show the world what you are all about! You can do it! After all, you’re a blogger now!
