The July 4th Holiday is coming and it’s time to celebrate! Dust off the BBQ grill, clean up your picnic table and get ready for a fun-filled weekend of holiday activities. Here are just a few ideas to get you started if you haven’t made plans already!
Since temperatures are traditionally high this time of year, think about spending time time at the pool or the beach. The cool water is refreshing, the kids love splashing around and swimming is actually great exercise for all ages. Just remember to pack lots of sunscreen and watch to make sure you are not getting sunburned!
Maybe you’re the type that loves to get away from it all. Spend a nice afternoon relaxing in a hammock, or fishing in your favorite spot…or even catching up on your reading. It’s so hard to relax most days, this is your chance to take it easy and enjoy spending some quiet time doing the things you love the best. Try to spend some time outdoors enjoying the fresh air and sunshine along the way.
Are you more of a road warrior? Maybe you love to travel every chance you get? The extra long weekend is a great opportunity to check out a state park, visit friends or relatives in another city, or just go somewhere you have never been before. Traveling is always a great adventure….exploring new places, seeing new sights and broadening your horizons. Take a few minutes to plan a nice getaway…or just throw a dart at the map and drive there! Either way, pay attention to traffic on this busy holiday weekend because lots of folks are out on the roads, so a little extra caution is wise.
Of course, great food HAS to be a part of any perfect holiday celebration. The traditional 4th of July meal is either a BBQ cookout or a picnic. Whichever you prefer, be sure to have lots of friends and family members with you to celebrate the occasion right along with you. Here’s a couple of fun facts…Did you know that Americans eat approximately 155 MILLION pounds of hot dogs on July 4th each year? That’s a lot of hot dogs! And even more amazing…those same Americans spend $92 MILLION dollars on potato chips, $167.5 MILLION dollars on watermelon and a staggering $341.4 MILLION dollars on beer EVERY SINGLE 4th of July!!! I guess that tells me where our priorities are! LOL
Of course, every 4th of July has to go out with a bang! There are local fireworks shows all across the United States that are designed to awe and astound us with their amazing explosions of light, color and sound. From your local hometown show to your nationally televised fireworks extravaganzas…they are all brilliant and beautiful to watch. Some areas have multiple shows throughout the holiday weekend, giving you the opportunity to experience the excitement more than once. Get there early to get a great seat, and enjoy the show. But, keep in mind….not EVERYONE loves fireworks….
Remember, your furbabies at home. A lot of pets are frightened by the explosions and popping sounds from fireworks. More pets actually run away from home on July 4th than any other day of the year. Of course, they don’t understand where the noise is coming from, so it frightens them even more. Since animals have a much better sense of hearing than we do, sounds are actually amplified for them so the explosions are even louder than they are for us. Make sure that you make arrangements for your pet if you won’t be home with them when the fireworks are occurring. Get a friend or relative to sit with them, bring them into an area of the house where they can “hide” or snuggle in to feel safe. Put outdoor pets into a garage or closed area so they cannot escape and run away. Do whatever it takes to insure that they are comfortable and taken care of because they are family members, after all!
Lastly, take a couple of minutes to remember the reason for the holiday. Educate your children about Independence Day and what it means to our great country. And then, do everything you can do have a great holiday weekend….no matter how you choose to spend yours.
