You know those times when you need a 15 minute appetizer or snack that tastes like you baked all day? Well, here you go! These little cheesy swirls of amazingness are made with buttery crescent rolls (who doesn’t love those?!?) and two kinds of cheese, and then baked to a golden brown, flaky finish that will have them disappearing as soon as you set them out.
Start with one can of crescent rolls…or you may want to make two because I am telling you, these won’t last long! Open them up and flatten them out, using your fingers to pinch together all the seams. If it is warm in your house, you may want to sprinkle a tiny bit of flour on the counter to prevent these from sticking before rolling them out.
Next, open a container of Philadelphia Cream Cheese Spread with Chive and Onion. If you have never had this stuff, you will thank me for this! Using a spatula, stir it around a bit to loosen it up and make it easy to spread. Then, spread about 4 Tbs all over the rolled out crescent dough. This doesn’t have to be perfect, but try to keep it fairly consistent. By the way, this spread comes in a couple of other flavors, and they work well in this…but the Chive and Onion is my very favorite.
Next, sprinkle 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over the cream cheese spread. Again, keep it fairly consistent. Then, I like to sprinkle a bit of fresh basil over the top. I used purple basil this time because my garden is full of it right now!
Now, carefully roll the long side up…pushing the dough with your fingers to make it into a roll. It’s okay if the roll isn’t perfect…just do the best you can! After the roll is completely done, slice it into 3/4” slices. Your knife will probably squish the roll as you are doing this, but you can round them out when you put them on your baking sheet.
Place your cut slices onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If your rolls are a little squished, just push the sides together to round them out at this point. Again, they don’t have to be perfect. Now, bake for the amount of time shown on the crescent roll package. Some brands differ, but typically 10-14 minutes, or until golden brown.
These come out golden brown and flaky on the outside and cheesy and gooey on the inside. The cream cheese spread and the fresh basil add a bit of herbal freshness and the mozzarella adds a salty, creamy texture. Combine that with the buttery crescent rolls, and these are a real winner!
Make these for your next party, game day, or get-together. I guarantee they will be gone before you know it…and nobody but you has to know how simple they are to make! Enjoy!
**NOTE – You can substitute different cream cheese spreads or different shredded cheeses in this recipe to create interesting varieties…make them the way YOU like them!
